BROKEN BAYOU

About the Book

BROKEN BAYOU is my NaNo WriMo novel hatched from an article I read in USA Today. The article told about a young teacher who went missing after a night of drinking in New Orleans. Turns out she was another victim of drunk driving. Her car was discovered in a bayou. But it’s what else the divers found in that bayou that caught my attention.

BROKEN BAYOU revolves around Dr. Willa Davies, a successful radio self-help guru with a bestselling book and a radio show on the verge of being syndicated. She grew up in Texas with an absentee father, a bi-polar mother, and a learning-impaired little sister in circumstances that directed her as an adult toward the field of psychiatry and helping others.

Then her invalid mother calls and asks for help. She’s received a letter from a group of lawyers stating a plantation home belonging to Willa’s deceased twin aunts is being cleaned out and sold. She needs Willa to go down to Broken Bayou and retrieve a box from the home’s attic. But the last time Willa visited that plantation was 1987, and she swore she’d never go back.

Reluctant, but keeping a promise she made to her younger sister, Willa agrees to go.

While grappling with painful demons from her past, neglecting her career for the first time, and sorting out new feelings with an old flame, Willa must face what is being exhumed from the depths of the murky water in Broken Bayou and how it might relate to that summer in 1987. The secrets buried there will lead Willa down a dangerous path where discovering the truth may prove deadly.

BROKEN BAYOU is a dual-timeline story told from Willa’s point of view in present day and in that summer of 1987.
