Stepping Outside Your Comfort Zone

Most of us surround ourselves by a bubble in some form or another. A protective barrier. A safe haven. Like those giant clear hamster balls people role around in. A comfort zone. A place where you know what to expect and when to expect it. Yes, sometimes the bubble can be boring in its predictability but that predictably can feel like a warm blanket. And it can be hard to shed that blanket for the cold unfamiliar. Sometimes, though, we must challenge ourselves to do just that.

I’m a creature of habit and I have quite a comfort zone. But I’m learning to step outside it more and more. My first step was attending writers’ conferences by myself. My next step was this blog–a real doozie. Two weeks ago, I took another step.

A friend emailed me and asked if I would be the guest speaker at a dinner her mother-in-law was hosting for a group of local women who gather every month to commiserate. I quickly typed yes and hit send before the comfort-seeking magnet in my brain switched on and that little voice said, “No, no,no. That’s outside the bubble.” But the yes was already out in the universe, and my inner child jumped up and down with glee.ย

I prepared a speech about my journey to publish my first novel. It’s a topic I’m comfortable with but one I haven’t shared while standing behind a podium with a mic and forty strangers staring at me. It was fantastic. Those women nodded and laughed and clapped and asked questions and lifted me into the stratosphere. I only hope they had as much fun as I did! There’s something to be said about being surrounded by women who all have their own amazing stories to tell, and having the privilege of telling mine.ย

I have a sticker on my computer…a reminder to step outside the bubble every now and then. Take a risk. Try something new.

This morning, I’m back in my bubble but the lingering effects of leaving it still surround me. In the form of a smile…as I anticipate my next leap.ย

What will your next leap be?

Well done! Proud of you girlfriend. Doing things that challenge us and scare us a little is how we grow. Otherwise we grow stale. Keep it up!
